Chinese video sharing platform TikTok has again topped list as the world’s most downloaded app in the month of October, 2021, TikTok app downloads were more than 57 million, Sensor Tower’s Store Intelligence platform data showed. The most downloads of TikTok were from Douyin in China at 17 percent and the United States (US) with 11 percent. Facebook-owned Instagram came in 2nd.
For more than 10 months now, TikTok has been the most downloaded non-gaming app. In fact, back in August, it was named as the most downloaded app of 2020. The Chinese video-sharing platform is the only non-Facebook app to mark its presence in the top five downloads list worldwide.
Instagram secured second spot in the list of most downloads worldwide with more than 56 million installs, which is a 31 percent increase since the previous month. The countries which had the most downloads included India with 39 percent, followed by Brazil with 6 percent.
However, Instagram topped the Google Play Downloads worldwide, where TikTok stood at spot 3.
Facebook, WhatsApp and Telegram found their place in the top 5 downloaded non-game list of October 2021, besides TikTok and Instagram. Snapchat, Messenger, Shopping app – Meesho, Spotif and video editor – CapCut also made it to the list of top 10.
According to the Sensor Tower and MAAS data, shopping apps reached 113 million downloads in October 2021, the first time since October 2020 when the category had reached its threshold. Shopping app, Meesho, which secured eighth spot in the top 10 list of apps by overall downloads, contributed more than 12 million downloads.
Notably, the most downloaded non-gaming app TikTok was banned by the Indian Government last year along with 58 other Chinese-originated applications, including CamScanner and PUBG Mobile citing national security concerns. In spite of that, TikTok is gaining huge popularity among other countries.
In the absence of TikTok, other applications took its place in India like Instagram Reels, YouTube Shots, Byte, Dubmash and more.
TikTok, an app best known for dancing videos with 1 billion users worldwide, has also become a shopping phenomenon. National chains in the US are setting up TikTok sections.
