Kangaroo, a creator economy startup that had dubbed itself a “Roblox for stories,” is in the process of shutting down, its co-founder and CEO Katie Mishra has told people close to the company. It’s not clear whether the Palo Alto, Calif., startup, which raised $3.3 million in funding last year, will try to relaunch with a different product. Mishra did not respond to a request for comment.
Mishra, a Stanford University computer science major who graduated this year, founded the startup in September 2020 with former Meta Platforms engineer Maria Zlatkova and actor Kiernan Shipka. The app, released on iOS and Android in April this year, aimed to make it easier for influencers and celebrities to create interactive stories and meet with fans as digital avatars in virtual worlds. It brought on TikTok creators Bailey Spinn, who has 12.4 million followers on the short-form video app, and Baby Ariel, who has 36 million followers, to help launch the Kangaroo app.
